Okay, can someone explain how to remove the vent screen?

If memory serves me correctly, you just pull the two knobs straight off. They are held by a little spring and ball bearing like a socket. They probably haven't been off since the 60's so they may need a little wiggle. Once they are off the screen comes out easy. Good luck.

I saw the screws that hold the crank in place, but did not want to try it until someone could guide me. Sounds like I'll need luck with it!
