Yes, I know, it's a sickness. But the chickens might as well hang out in style. Mothers day came, and I have chickens promised to my lovely wife. Chickens are all she has been talking about lately, so we made a trip to check out some yard birds on Saturday. We needed a place to keep them, and I have been studying chicken tractors on the 'net. When this is finished, it will have 1"X2" wire around the bottom, the top will be a cozy Airflyte influenced coop. It will have one "door" to the left for a feeder, one to the right for a nesting box, and one in the middle for access to the inside. It will have a roost inside, and a ramp for the birds to be able to get up into the luxury lounge area. Stay tuned for more... Attachments:

That is going to be incredible! We originally bought the Kenskill for $100 to turn into a chicken coop.....the chickens are gone, thanks to a fox and the kenskill is just too cool to do that to. Good Luck with this!

It is a sickness, vintage trailers and chickens...as soon as we get to the farm, my wife has given me an edict...she gets her chickens before I get my next trailer...I better get up the morning after we move in and get her some chickens just to be on the safe side...who knows what I might turn up in trailers the afternoon after we move in. Keep track of your costs for building it...when you paint it and put some wings on it and post the pics...the orders are going to come...ah, um...flying in.

Dennis, your on! ;D The rooster will be "Dennis".
I'm using exterior grade ply, but I am concerned about the "roof". Can you physically apply enough exterior paint to make the 1/4" ply survive? I could bend up some aluminum, but I'm trying to keep costs down. (although, aluminum is cheap)
The "roof" will overhang the sides by about 1 1/2 inches, like an eave. The width of the box is 3'9", the roof is right at 4'. Length is 7'6", the base it sits on is 4x8. It will have 10" wheels to push it around.

You are going to want to get into the coop from the top anyway to get the eggs etc..... I'd used galvanized roofing tin on a hinge.

The funny thing is, its about 1/2 scale. Its almost 8' long, and it is 4' tall. Its built about as crappy as a real Shasta. If it had a metal frame under it, you could tow it. hmmm.

if you tow it, would that make it a Chicken Coupe?

Its getting dark on me, but here is a photo of where I'm at. Needs paint and 4 10" wheels installed. Needs a ramp for the birds to make it into the coop. And I will have to make another row of nesting boxes on the "streetside" of the camper. I think we will start with less than six hens and see how it goes. Sorry Dennis, when a rooster comes along, he will be named Dennis! Attachments:

BUAHAHAAHA! I love this! I wish I had thought to make a Shasta coop before I got ours. Hilarious. I love the creativity. You can't keep chickens if you don't have a sense of humor. They're fabulous. Here's a link to my girls: www.kitschykitten.com/category/backyard-chickens/What breeds are you thinking of? -Alana

This is so creative! It's looking good and the chickens are sure to love it! I'd love to get chickens someday!
What do you all that have them do as far as if you go away for a weekend or more camping? Do you have someone come in and feed/water them? Are they easy to keep as far as cleaning their coop, etc.,? I've heard they each have their own personalities and are quite interesting. I'd like some hens named Ethel, Lucy and Thelma and Louise (:

As far as watering them, a local guy turned me onto chicken nipples. YEP. ;D So I bought some nipples on Ebay and installed them in an icing bucket I got from the grocery store. It will keep the bugs out, and the chickens out . The water will stay clean, and off the ground. As far as names, I was thinking, Kel, Mary, and Alana would be a great start! HAAA

I think one will have to be named lo. for loflyte, since chickens stay close to the ground.
Alana, we are thinking of the Buff Orpingtons. They act like cats in that they actually will want to hang around you instead of running from you.

The rooster is called Dinner and the hens are called: Fritatta, Benedict, Quiche, and Custard!
What fun to have your own chickens.

Spent some time suffering from allergies this weekend, and worked on the "Ham-N-Eggs" project. Get it? Good ;D More paint, this detailing is just as consuming as the real thing. Are the chickens going to even care? I used Behr high solids stain/sealer all over it, and then, working from the bottom up, painted the blue (it was a quart I bought from Sherwin-Williams), then the Z-stripe (it is Rustoleum color - Aluminum) Attachments:
