Hi My trailer doesn't have brakes (it's only 14', 1600 lbs) and never did. But I'm thinking this would be a good upgrade before our long summer road trip which will include some fair bit of mountain driving and we'll be loaded. My tow vehicle is a 5spd 4cyl 4x4 Nissan Frontier (tow package) and has a 3500# tow rating. Can anyone advise how difficult or expensive it would be to install trailer brakes and a controller?

Brakes are always a good idea even on smaller trailers.
Probably the easiest thing to do is replace the axle. I bought one for my trailer for I think $390 shipped to my door.
The other option is to look under your trailer and see if you might have a bolting option to add electric brakes. If you do there will be a square plate where you can do this.
If you take some pics of your axle behind the wheel we might be able to guide you to wha to do next.

Thanks Dennis I also saw on e trailer that you can have the square plate welded on and then attach electric brakes. I think I could manage what was shown on the e trailer video from there, which would mean converting from a 4 way flat to a 5 way harness to connect to the tow vehicle. With the new axle you're talking about that would include the electric brakes as part of it? Replacing an axle is way beyond my ability I think. I still have to tow my trailer down from Oregon, before I can take pictures of the axle.

My only concern with the plates being added is that if there not welded on right you could get a pulsation on the trailer. Just be careful.

distant75, I would love some info on what axle you used. And how bad was the install?

If anyone is curious. I priced out a complete bolt in 3500 pound axle with electric brakes today for $200. This is for my 65 Compact. Will clear the 13 inch wheels an all.

I am very curious, please post or pm sources. Thanks. I'll try to get my local guys to match when I'm ready. I think I would use the same likely set up on my 1500 or very close.

Thanks Brian. I am more of a visual learner, I guess I always have been.
