So we our on our trip tp Williamsburg VA. this weekend. Around 300 and some miles for us. We left out Thursday around 5pm. The trip was going great. Four hours into it, right at the NC/VA line it felt like we hit a different type of pavement on the road. It was just louder and a little more vibration.
Then as I asked my wife if she hears that, we heard a "pop" followed by sparks flying out the back of our Shasta. When I pulled over, the street side tire was wedged up in the floor under the kitchen sink.
Once the wrecker showed up and we got it on the flatbed. I saw that the tire sheared through the lug nuts, released from the hub. Once off the hub it shot up through the floor. At that point the trailer was ridding on the u bolts then the spring plat and once that was gone the first leaf of the spring pack.
It is now midnight as we get it towed to a hotel parking lot. Once we checked into the hotel I started trying to track down the parts to get it back on the road and maybe save the trip. What I was slowly finding out is that when you are in a "big" small town in Virgina, that your chances of finding parts for a 1964 Shasta 16SC axel was slim to none.
Then when I ran across a Tractor Supply store I was feeling better, but all they had for me was the tire. The had some general use tube axle that I could use if it got to that point. What I needed to get back on the road was the u bolts, spring plate, wheel studs, bearing cap, and a Tire. At least I found the tire.
As I was walking out the lady told me to check out Overby marine 40 minutes away, "he always has odd trailer stuff". With a call to Rufus Overby I knew I was going to ba able to maybe save the trip. It is now Friday at 11am and I head up to Overby Marine. 30 minutes later Rufus had me set up with every thing I needed. I probably paid $70 more for the tire and rim but I was not in a position to bargain and I was tired of running around.
After making my way back to the Hotel, I spent the next hour working on the old Girl. Everything worked and we were back on the road.
So after $175 tow, $85 hotel, $270 tire and axel parts, $50 worth of tools from Wally world and one day of your trip taken away I say to you
CHECK YOUR LUG NUTS!!!
After I told Rufus what happened and he looked at the rim and hub he said the lug nuts got loose. The road noise I heard was the tire starting to wollow out the holes in the rim. The vibration was when the rim started to bounce and was breaking the wheel studs. Well the pop I am sure you know what happened then.
I hate to say it but I always took for granted that the tires where on securely. I never checked them from the time I bought it. We probably drove a solid 1800 mile with it like that.
Well we are in Williamsburg and loving it. So yes we were able to save the trip
