The Forester has a nickel size hole in the roof above where the potty closet was. Currently there's a blob of hard plastic (silicone?) that they used to cover it.
I'm wondering if I could find a small piece of metal at the hardware store and I was to put butyl tape on it and silicone sealant in the screw holes prior to screwing it in would that work?
I mean no one will see the roof anyway and wouldn't this be better than leaving the blob of whatever it is in there?
Suggestions please?

Mary-
I would do the patch thing. Use a piece of aluminum instead of galvanized. Get something heavier gauge than roof flashing. Most hardware stores have small pieces of aluminum sheet available.
Fill the hole best you can with Vulkum and then make sure that the patch panel is large enough to accommodate the width of butyl tape. Set the screws right through the line of butyl. Then do the sealant (some thing like Dicor) on the perimeter of the panel and the screw heads.
That should work fine.
