OK so I get that the toothpicks and glue fill the holes that are left behind when removing the j-rails BUT, I have also read that when you are replacing the butyl you should use new screws that are a little longer (which I get why you do this) in the same holes. So I'm confused! My rails that I am reusing should still line up with the same holes left behind so do I or do I not use the toothpicks? I get that it might make it easier to line up the rails when going back to have a few as markers but am I still missing something as to why I would do this to all of the holes anyway? Thank you All for your help!!!

I got all new screws - same size #8 x 3/4" SS. I had a lot of new framing at the roadside edges and window frames, so I was screwing into new wood - no problems. I used toothpicks and glue in every screw hole in original framing that wasn't replaced. I did used some larger screws (#10 x 3/4") in some spots that the #8 screws weren't getting a good bite. You'll know if you need a larger screw or a smaller hole when you tighten the screw. If it snugs up without stripping out, you should be fine. No amount of toothpicks and glue will help if your screwing into soft/rotten wood though.
