I decided to do the same for my door last weekend! I bought the magnetic primer and will paint over it with the chalkboard paint. I heard you have to use strong magnets though.

Someone who used the magnetic chalkboard paint told me it doesn't hold magnets very well. She said it only held really small, light ones. So I just opted to do the chalkboard only version. Magnets would of been fun though.

Yeah heard that too and the primer was kind of expensive, ($25 for 15 sq. ft. coverage), but I couldn't resist. I'll let you know how it works out.

If you're going to paint anyway, you could use a thin steel plate, paint with the chalkboard paint, then hang it like a picture... Magnetic and chalkboard...

I finished the door and the magnetic primer does work! I was able to even hang pictures though I have my doubts they'd stick while driving. I checked the Rustoleum website and apparently they've improved the formula for better magnetism. My only complaint is, even with sanding between primer coats (3 coats), the texture is a pretty rough. I'm waiting for the chalk paint to set up a few more days then I'll be able to see if the rough surface makes any difference when writing.
