Yep were going for it! I have made up my mind and were loosing the sleeping loft and going to re-make it as a Airflyte. If you've seen the blog you know where we are, if not please check it out. We're a long ways away but that to be expected on a ground up/skin off resto!

Can you make it so it still folds out? Then you'd have the first Shasta Transformer!

I love the "to do" list... sounds familiar .... Love the floor, you are on your way my friend. So are you going to try and make it look like an orginal Airflyte? Inside and out? As a Astro owner I am OFFENDED SIR! ... No I get it the bunk is uggos, but so functional! I was toying with this idea when I did mine. You will miss it some day!!!! The conversion should really not be difficult at all... especially if you are putting a new roof on it. best of luck... you traitor!

Actually Tyler, I really like the look of the Astro's. I have lamented about this since I bought it. The three main issues I have with it is,
1) I need a extension to tow it(which I don't like since it adds a lot of torque to hitch, or buy a truck(my wife already shot that one down!) 2) The PO ruined the upper front window, which is pretty much impossible to find. The PO used wood base shoe to hold the glass in place, and nailed it through the aluminum frame. So the frame is rattled with holes and the aluminum glass trim is long gone and not available. 3) We have no kids or plans to have kids!
My plan is to do a Airflyte on the outside, I am planning on doing front dinette, and rear side gaucho couch like the original, the toilet is gone(that's my wife's doing), and build a large closet there.
So the plan is to basically combine the Astrodome and Airflyte, but make it look like something Shasta could have built.

Can you make it so it still folds out? Then you'd have the first Shasta Transformer! I always though it would be sweet to salvage a pushout assembly from a new camper and modify a Shasta to have this. Make it look like it was original with original style siding and windows. Could you imagine the extra space? ( and the doubletakes at the campground)

You'd probably have to do it on both sides to prevent the little trailer from going down the highway tilting to starboard (or port). Hmm, Shastformer, what a concept!

Soooooo... I did it! A Dome no more! Please note I did not have a template for the front curve. I detailed to process on my blog on how I did it. It may not be perfect but its darn close! Here is a few teaser pictures of the new walls. One last note: A Huge thanks to fellow Member Flyingham, for documenting his rebuild so well. The pictures you posted on the VSTF made this possible with out a template!

I could have made you a template of Coralee since I had her wall off and am rebiulding her also. I like the extra rienforcements you did to the framing. I did that also since I was convinced Coralee was a Monday morning hangover build.

When we raised Hamlet's roof, hubby just did the roofline freehand. Turned out pretty well, and it looks original. Yours is going to look great, and we salute your bravery! The one thing better than thinking outside the box is not having a box to begin with!

Thanks everyone, its a challenge for sure! Today was a great day, while I was at our local RV salvage, picking up gimp. I picked up a really nice icebox($30) a 60's chrome wedgewood Stove($75) and a hehr gasket that VTS doesn't sell. Vikx you wanted more well here you go! I got the walls skinned today and a U-Haul reserved for tomorrow to bring the walls the 5 miles from my shop to my house. Yeah I bought out our Home Depot, ...stupid twist nails

Well, I do have to say I love the Astrodomes...but, that said, there is an awesome rebuild. It's coming out fantastic.
Going to keep watching, of course.

Thanks everyone, it's not like its groundbreaking, but for some reason I feel like I am Neil Armstrong walking the moon for the first time. It's one small step for man, one giant leap for Shasta kind!

What an incredible project. I really like the way I can imagine how mine was built at the factory. Building the walls and then putting them on the frame...I can also see why they might have put the paneling up the way they did. How will you be treating your wood....Shellac? Will you be spraying prior to putting them up or after?

I am going to put the walls up with out finsh, that way when I put the ceiling and cabinets in it all will match. My wife and I were just looking at stain samples, I haven't decided if I am going to stain and poly or just Shellac.

It seems to be coming together pretty quickly. It looks great so far. I hear ya about the giant tarp, that is what we have our torn apart 56 covered with also.

Could you imagine the extra space? ( and the doubletakes at the campground) I'm still kind of toying with the idea of designing just my bed to be a slide-out.... Could be done fairly easily with heavy-duty drawer slides on top and bottom.
