hey what do you use on the brass threads when connecting propane lines. it looks like someone used plumber's putty,

Oh dear! I'm no expert, but that can't be right! I believe there are a couple kinds of Teflon tape for pipe threads. The white is for ordinary plumbing, and the yellow is for gas. I've seen both at the hardware store. But by all means, check with someone qualified. I'm assuming the yellow tape is ok for propane as well as natural gas, but I could be totally wrong about that.
