I was poking around under my new (new to me) 61 Compact and noticed that there was a coil spring on one side of my axle and on the other none. Where could I find a replacement? Could this be replaced with shocks? Also it looks like it is equipped with brakes. Just not hooked up.

Doesn't sound original. Some trailers tend to be lower on one side than the other; maybe that's the reason it's there... Do you have a picture?
Brakes are easy to hook up. You will need to go with a 7 way tow cord and proper wiring/brake controller in your vehicle.

opposite door side. no spring? I do see wires attached on either hub so I assume it has electric brakes. Looks like I'm missing a spring though? Attachments:

I'm guessing your Compact was low on the door side and a PO added the spring to compensate. It won't hurt anything if it remains. You might take the trailer to a frame shop and see what they think.
The brake wires look fine. If you install a J box near the front and add the proper wiring, they should work. Of course check the pads and wheel bearings while you're at it.
Thanks for the pictures.

Yeah, no spring mounts, just a spring. PO-modified.
