Today’s project was to build dinette seat frames. My original configuration had a Gaucho bed up front, I wanted to switch it to a dinette. So I’m in the process of building the lower frame, dinette seat frames, and the tabletop. This was step one. My plan is to use a 5” layer of firm high-density foam instead of springs, on top of that I’ll have a layer of softer foam. If anyone has redone these frames and reupholstered their bench seat that can offer words of wisdom, I’d love to hear from you. Thanks to persimmonpal for coming up with the hinges and for the loaner frames that I used for the template. Old New

@ Schweet Now that it is too late to suggest, did'nt the original have the vent just below the sink, out the side wall? Oh wait. That is the Airflyte....

Chris, nope the 16-sc/Astrodome had the vent out the roof. Here is the picture of the water closet taken before demo, note the pipe going up the wall!

Yup, there it goes, right through that brand-new roof. I forgot that the vent pipe went all the way up through the w/c.

smccusk - If you use the firm, upholstery grade foam, you might not really need the softer stuff on top unless the person who will do most of the sleeping there likes a soft surface. Instead, once you have the foam, wrap it in upholsterer's poly batting. It is heavier than quilt batting and will give the cushions a little "give." It also looks a lot more professional when it's done. Those square, square corners tend to look a little cheap-o. If you are going to do the covers yourself, make sure they are almost too small for the cushions. This will keep the fabric from sagging and bagging over the cushions after a few weeks of use. If a pro is going to do the covers, you shouldn't need to worry.

Today is Metal day...Put on some Zeppelin and polished away. Another couple weeks and I might be done with windows and trim. Hamlet, I like your thoughts on the dinette cushions. Thanks, I think I'll go that route.

Hubby packed the wheel bearings today. We were told they had been done but we wanted to make sure before we headed out on a longer trip.

I got one more piece of Luan on the wall, one piece at a time. it is just cut out and stuck up I still have to glue and screw it. Getting there slowly, you can see my new door trim, polished screen door, light switches with dimmer built in, and wiring for my wall sconce etc.

Today I made the new door jamb/stop for the 57. I'll make the threshhold and the header tomorrow because the batteries went dead on my camera and so did the charger. I wanted to do a video on this process. Had to order a new charger from Ebay because the stupid stores that sell the stupid cameras don't sell the stupid batteries or the stupid charger for this stupid Sony camera. I really need to get a new camera. Tomorrow I will be using the old old old camera so I can show you some pics of the finished product. I bend my own and we are thinking of making them for other people if we can figure out a cheap way to ship them.

Today we started putting on the new railing. We did the awning rail first. What a pain in the you-know-what! Then we worked our way down the side, so we could butt the J Rail up to the awning rail, rather that starting from the bottom corner like Larry said to do (sorry Larry). We knew there was going to be a problem with the bottom, but we had a creative solution. Dig a trench! LOL Attachments:

Boandsusan, I know what you mean. I had to look back in order to see that we really have accomplished something. I'd love to see pictures of the trim you did. We made a list of the things we need to complete before we take her on a trip and it's not TOO long. Technically, we could probably take her out in a few weeks or so, but I don't want her to make her "debut" until she's really ready, and that means paint. Today was BEA -utiful, so we finished up all the new railing. Hopefully there will be no more leaks. We'll find out in a few days when the next front comes in.

There’s a cold week on tap in New England. Seems like a good time to break down, replace seals, and clean up the windows. This is the dinette window deconstructed…should keep me busy for a while. The seals disintegrated when I touched them…this project is way overdue.

Spent the morning chasing down a Electrical demon, it appears I put two screws into the running lights wire. I missed every wire in the trailer, except 1!
Then I spent the afternoon making hollow core cabinet doors in the true Shasta Fashion.

I found the perfect welting. I found the fabric and the piping in Van Nuys, Ca. $35 for 2 yards and 200' of 5/32" piping. I am glad I sent the old welting back to VTS. I had a upholstery shop sew it up for $75. My trailer is coming along great. The welting lays down really nice. But I wasn't satisfied with what they had to offer. So I found my own and had it fabricated. The mocha color blends right in with the amber shellac and it has some texture on it and it is a vinyl embedded into fabric. Very durable. I purchased a pneumatic stapler and it is worth every penny. I am happy I was patient enough until I found the correct product. AS MY WIFE WOULD SAY "STEP ASIDE AND LET ME SHOW YOU HOW IT IS DONE" because she has seen me tear this trailer down and now put it back together. She has been there all the way. Sustaining me with delicious food and cold beer.

Marc finished the dinette table today. We're pretty happy with it. The laminate and metal trim were surprisingly easy to work with. He'll probably do the kitchen counter next weekend. Attachments:

I'm deciding what to spend my tax refund on. Poplar, the last few sheets of insulation and birch, maybe a solar panel or new batteries...

I finally found some lights that will probably just be temporary until I can find some really nice originals, if I can't, they may become permanent. I found all the stuff to put these together at Lowe's and the total fixture price was $12.00, not bad and they look vintage.

Hung the main door in the 57 Shasta. I completely rebuilt that door including new metal skin. Only original parts were the outer frame and one stick of wood so I was a little worried as to whether it would fit right again. It fit perfect. I took the jamb back out because I want to make a new one with a minor adjustment. Same with the head metal trim.

Thanks Cowcharge,
No I have a local painter here who does a great job. He just started painting vintage trailers a few years ago. Been a body man all his life.

I could tell that was a spray job. What kind of paint did he use? Did he clear coat it?
