Hi everyone i am new to this this forum and i guess this is where i tell you about myself, in case you are interested ;D I have/had been a full-timer for the last 8 months living in a 1972 Kayot Forrester, that i fixed up a tad to modernize it. Sadly i sold that the other day to a great gal, who is taking it across the U.S. to do some road tripping. So i have a new project..... Three days ago i picked up a 1956 Shasta compact (i think its a compact) and getting ready to start pulling panels to fix the usual water damage that ive been all so accustomed on my last trailer. Anyhow i am sure i will have some questions for you all and i am guessing i will fall into a specific catergory of people on here because i like modifications (classic on the outside modern on the inside) i also have to admit that i enjoy those crazy things like electrical wall sockets and fresh water inlets (i guess in 1956 they didnt have electrical sockets in RV's) because hey, i am a full timer! So in closing if you see pictures of me destroying sacred pieces of art or commiting a crime against humanity by chopping up something you will just have to look deep into your heart and forgive me

Welcome, bigkarma! If it's a '56, it's not a Compact. Those were first made in very late '59 for the '60 model year (as near as anyone can tell). They have a different shape from the mid 50s Shastas. Yours would be much more rounded, have a dinette in the front, bed in the back, and kitchen on the street side. And no wings. Also, by '59, they did have spigots to hook to city water, and although early Compacts didn't have sockets, we did add one, and many folks here have added several. Lots of us have "modernized" ours while still keeping a vintage flair. Lots of folks have looked at Hamlet, and not realized that the interior isn't completely original (well, except for that nice hot shower and porta-potty in what used to be the closet). ;D
And may Hamlet be the first to make the request required of all new owners...
PICTURES! Post LOTS of pictures! (They help us learn, dream, and cheer others on.)

Welcome Bigkarma....
A 72 Forrester IS a modern trailer around here LOL...
I have worked on lots of trailers but this is my first Shasta and after I almost burned it to the ground in frustration, I found this forum and then all was once again right and proper in the world. You will find all the help you will ever need on a Shasta and then some right here.
What you have is a 1500. That's the way they were listed on the brochures of the day. I'll see if I can find a photo for you. I have it somewhere.

Hamlet thank you for your information about the compacts not being out until the the late 59's......I really had no clue about that. I am currently still digging around try to find the original weight of this trailer and just figured mine was a compact (because of the length). By the way do you happen to know what the original weight of the "1956" was? i am still stumped.
Also how do i see the pictures of your project that you spoke of in your post?

Hamlet is partly tech saavy, but mostly just easily frustrated, so the best way to show what we did is to add the link to the blog post our daughter did... www.howiseelife.com/blog/2011/06/20/trailer/It DOES sound like you have a 1500. If you do a web search, you will find pics of some gorgeous ones. And you could reconfigure the inside in all sorts of ways, but do consider having it look vintage. If you ever decide to sell, that will make it much easier.

And I have a 57 that I am working on right now. It belongs to one of the other members here. I am getting close to finished with it and have made a video series of the entire restore... Here's the website. www.cannedhamtrailers.comI will have to photograph the brochures again. They are over at my friend's house and I will get that done in the next day or so. Back when these were new, the going price for the 1500 out the door was $1100 if I remember correctly. I have a price list for all the Shastas from back then also. The first Delux model sold for about $2300 I think. I'll photograph that price list also.

they are 6'6" wide and about 14'8" long including the tongue. Yes that is what size mine is 6'6 and the length sounds spot on, so that must be the one. Thank you for the information

If you can get a scan (instead of a picture) i could resize (if need be) using adobe illustrator and then retouch it using photoshop to make it into a an actual downloable PDF file for the users on here to just print off and have with them. Also i have been watching your videos, and i do appreciate the time you put into making those, i will make sure i send you a donation because you will save me from going back and forth to the lumber yard multiple times my friend. I am at about the part 2c of your video series, as far as the progress on my own trailer

I have no idea how to make a PDF so all I can do is a few photos of the brochure and price list. We found them in an old Shasta we got for free last year. I have to go to my friend's house which I do all the time anyways and ask her if she can find them.

mobiltec, big karma was saying if you can scan the brochures (instead of taking photos of them) he could then photoshop fiddle with them and he would create the PDFs. Does anyone you know have a scanner? That's all you need to do your part. Geography can be a pain sometimes.

First let me find the brochures and price list. It's over at my friend's place and I already asked her to be ready to look for it when I come over. She may have a scanner. I guess she can email that to me...

If you are out this way, bring them with you. I can scan them into pdf files. Our 80 degrees might tempt you to visit the land of sand.

Oh wow my Dad lived in Palm Desert for most of the latter years of his life. Right down at the bottom of the 74. Near the big pink wall. I do go that way from time to time but not anytime soon. You know there is a trailer rally each year up on top of the mountain across from Lake Hemet. Hurky Creek?

There is also a vintage travel trailer "resort" just on the desert side of Julian called Pinecrest Resort. We stayed there a couple years ago and had a blast wandering through the grounds looking at all the old trailers. I think folks either buy or do a long-term lease on their plots of land, some have fixed their "yards" up quite nicely. There's an olympic size pool, nice rec room, etc. The perfect place to keep a big park model vintage trailer. www.pinecrestretreat.com/

How cool is that! It was a nice couple days. It was late winter, so still quite chilly at night and there was only one owner there midweek. So it was mostly just us, the dark, dark skies and the wild turkeys. Loved it.
