I have a '71 Shasta 1400 that I am doing some work on. The skin on the front is super pitted from what looks like tiny gravel dings. The rest of the skin is OK but the front really bothers me. I got a quote to replace that is $3000. Broken down as $2000 labor, $700 for the aluminum and $300 to reinstall the edge metal and re-seal. The bid was higher than I expected. Anybody have more knowledge than me on the subject?

I did my own labor, and replaced every square inch of skin including the roof on mine for less than $1000.00

Outrageous! They don't want to work on your trailer.
Rear aluminum on my 56 Aljo was $30. No pattern, but still. The entire roof with factory crimps on our 57 Corvette was $550, about 13 feet long by 80" wide.
Why not do it yourself? Paying others to do this kind of work just isn't cost effective. Plus: since your trailer is "newer", the eventual selling price will be lower. I wouldn't go too high in repair costs.

We did it ourselves. Cost about $200 for the front lower panel, with special crimps. May be less if you can find your crimp pattern in stock somewhere. We bought new jrail and installed it ourselves. If we can do it, you can do it!

We wound up having it done. Early Compact, total re-skin (there just wasn't anything that was really salvageable) and paint was about $3500 (34-36, I don't remember). I do remember that the aluminum was around half of that, and the paint was most of the rest. We ran into a time constraint and couldn't do it ourselves. Hamlet agrees with vikx, if you can, do it yourself. Then if you want a pro paint job, you'll still be able to afford it.
Vikx is right... They don't want to work on your trailer.

I just received the new skin for my trailer. The total cost for me was $1750 but I had it shipped from CA to MA…freight and crating ran about $470 of that. I also spent some extra cash on having the skin made with a 6” break pattern. Total skin cost (sides, roof, and wheel well moldings) was around $1280. I’m doing all the install myself…cheap labor.

If you are just getting that front piece it shouldn't cost you more than a couple hundred with the brakes and pittsburgh seams if you need (which if you are just getting the bottom front replaced you shouldn't need. And the install you can definitely do yourself. I'd call around. Where are you located if you tell us someone on the forum might be able to direct you to a good source.

Just replacing the front metal should cost you no more than a couple hundred for the metal including shipping and If I were doing the work and you lived nearby I would charge you $500 labor if you brought it to me. There's about $5 in new putty tape and some new screws to consider also. Shouldn't run over $750 total done by a professional who's done it before.
If this is an RV dealer you're talking about then it sounds about right.
How does the paneling look in the corners down there in front?

scuff those dents don to aluminum, bondo and sand then paint. several have done this, (then get some mud flaps for your tow vehicle).

Wow, thank you guys! I am such a novice at this. I clearly need to do more research and will not rush into anything. The place the quoted me that was a vintage trailer resto place here in Bend, OR called Flyte Camp. They are busy as hell and have been on TV recently such as Travel Channel. I don't think they want to mess with my trailer at all which would explain the high bid. I'm taking the trailer to another place tomorrow. If that fails I will do it myself, I should look into the Bondo thing because I know how to do that. Does it last?

All the bondo that has been used on my trailers has lasted but I didn't do it. Had a body and paint guy do it.

It's a plastic filler like bondo, but it's what the profession body shops use, it's easier to work and sands smooth with far less pin holes when you sand. Just don't let it sit overnight before sanding it, you'll be sanding forever if you do! I think Soup has first hand experiance with it.

I like to refer to them as "Fiberglass Reinforced Lightweight Filler" and "Ultra Feather Lite Finish Filler".

I don't think Flyte Camp messes with anything later than the early 60s. Just not enough value (in some minds) in the trailer to make it worth their while. So, yup, that explains the high bid.

Just got off the phone with Hemett Valley RV... I need to replace the front skin on my 1964 Shasta Astroflyte.. Metal cost was not bad, 125.00 for metal bends and bottom bend.. Problem is shipping to Ma from Calf is going to cost 270.00 Cant afford the shipping. Does anyone know of any metal shops in Massachusetts
Or has anyone had success with using diamond plate on the front

The issue isn't the aluminum....you can probably source that at most any sheet metal shop. This issue is the brakes...most shops can't handle the 6"brake pattern. I'd do some calling around to local shops to see what you can find. there are a number of members from New England that can hopefully help you source a good shop. Look under sheet metal fabrication. Seems to me with all the ship buildign that used to go on up there there's got to be a fairly deep bench of shops struggling for business. I found locally that if you go in and tell em about your project they get interested and will work with you to figure it out.
