Good Morning Everyone,
I really like these forums! I just purchased my first camper. It's registered as a 1972 Shasta 16SC.. Having a hard time finding info on that online!
I go to pick it up tonight. It's in decent shape, redoing the inside though to match my wife and I's tastes!
If you look at my avatar, that's a picture of it. What do you guys recommend for picture hosting? I would love to post some for everyone to see!
Any info on this camper would be great too. The info I find online says it is from the 60's, not 1972.
thanks!
Jason

I pick it up this evening. I'll start a refurbish thread and post what I can. My wife is looking forward to it now that she found 'tons' of ideas on pinterest... I think I'm happy about that... hahah because that means I will probably be doing a lot more to it :-)

Hello and welcome. Here is a brochure that might be useful. So here is a question for you. That brochure shows wings on it.. Mine doesn't have those, but it doesn't have any holes for it either.. on top of that, it has an attachable awnings that slides into 'slides' along the top and side of the camper.. right where 'wings' should be... any ideas?

Wow, you got me on that one. Maybe another member who is more knowledgeable on details such as that will chime in with an answer.

First, the answer is yes. Your 16SC would have been equipped with the 27" X 7" wings, as shown on the brochure. There are a lot of them missing amongst the older trailers, majorly because they a.) were removed for being out of style; b.) got in the way (of, for instance, installing an add-a-room or awning track...) ; c.) broke loose and were lost; d.) were stolen or sold off to someone who was looking for a pair (sound familiar?) If you study long enough you will find where the original holes should have been and will be able to find traces of the patch job of covering the holes when they were removed. They were screwed in from the outer side of the wings through the skin into the framing in the wall. Holes in the skin, but nothing to trace in the interior. It is likely your 16SC falls under category b.) and the forward holes may be obscured by the add-on rail. This will definitely lead you to a decision, whether to keep the added rail for the awning/add-a-room, or to re-install the wings. And the fact of the matter is it will boil down to a very personal choice, because only your camping needs should dictate whether you want the wings and the "original" feel or the added convenience of additional outside space. Either way, no one here will ever ever (wellokay, maybe a little... ) bust you about your choice!

hmm, ok.. That makes sense. I'm confused a bit though. documentation
I just uploaded these. The original doc says my Shasta comes 'with' a full length awning rail. Is that talking about the rail that goes right through the spot where the wings should be? I may be wrong, that is fine. Just trying to figure it out.

Since the awning slides in from the front, you can actually have your awning not run the whole length of your trailer....it can stop just short of the wings. Does that make sense?

The awning rail that goes from the bottom to the top is an add on....not original. That's what's messing you up. The original awning rail just goes along the top.

I'll have to take a close up pic and post it.. yes, that does make sense... my question is that the 'rail' that is actually on the trailer runs across the top right through where the wings should be. I agree, it was probably added later and the wings removed.. I just find it odd that the paperwork states there is an awning rail if there was wings on it when it was sold.

The "full-length awning rail" stretches along the top above the door. The original awning was a rectangular one that was just canvas and pole setup. The original rail would not have curved around beyond horizontal on the toaster style campers. The awning rail is 'C"-shaped, and at either end starts the "J" shape channel that acts as rain channel. The one edge of the awning had a cord on the edge that fed into the "C" channel.

Your added on add-a-room rails are confusing your issue. No "duh"s here. None of it makes any sense till you have been studying for a while... Forgot to ask...does yours have the "floral print" finish on the cabinet doors? I saw one that was the same year (or pretty close to) that had the yellow counters and appliances, and had a floral print finish that was a pretty nice offset to all that dark paneling.

I think it has been repainted. I'm not sure of the original. I will have to see when I pull the cupboards off to repaint them. I'll let you know if I see anything! I believe my camper used to have 'red' stripes on it too, instead of the grey it has now.. looks like it was re-painted.

I am sure that it has been repainted.
The stripes may have been painted red at some point, then re-painted with the grey, but originally they would have had a gold color to them. The siding is different textured in the stripes and was a gold-colored anodized aluminum, not a painted-on color. Many of these were painted different colors through the years as the gold coloring faded. I have also found that the sun-bleached "white" colored paint on most of these was originally an almond color...which you may be able to find (the original) by removing the "Shasta" emblem from the side in front of the door. The original color was protected on them by such features that were never removed.
