I have a 69 Shasta Compact that I'm going to change the axle under. Right now it has a cut down mobile home axle. Does anyone know the correct width of the axle from hub to hub (where the wheel bolts up) Brent

If no one answers this I can probably get a measurement off my aunt's 72 compact, it'll take a few days though.

That would be great. I could probably guess and get close but it would be nice to have the correct measurement. Thanks, Brent

A funny thing blu26ovl...I just happened to pull my axle and struts off my '69 compact oh....3 HOURS AGO. No joke - too late right now to go check, but tomorrow consider it done. I will measure from the inner most thread of each hub, and the total axle length.

Brent,
Sorry about the delay (law school coupled with a rather forgetful memory - failed to bookmark this site properly).
The measurements are as follows:
measuring from the inner most thread of one hub to the opposite hub's inner most thread - 64 3/4" (precision within 1/16 of an inch).
Hope that helps and if you have any further questions feel free to leave them here.
As far as mine goes, tore out the back wall for a complete rebuild, replaced all rotten wood in frame with treated 1x2, 1x4, and a 1x6. Stripped all 4-5 layers of paint off roof and prepped entire trailer for paint following the basic procedure laid out by Red Dirt on his blog w/ the exception of using oil based Tractor paint as my primary color (International White). Planning on painting within next three days. Also tore out old vinyl not only cause it had to be done but also to check status of the floor and replaced small sections again with treated. Lastly, sanded and then coated underbelly with 7 cans Rustoleum Underbody rubberized spray.
Good luck man
Cheers Rich

Thanks Rich, This will be a big help when I go looking for a new axle. I had to replace a lot of the wood framing in mine also, probably 40%. The floor is good except one bad place at the door where water leaked in. I've got all the bad wood replaced, new and painted paneling, built new cabinets and benches and now finishing the wiring. I sent post about the air conditioner on the other subject page and forget to include that he also made a drip pan and put under the A/C. Good luck on the camper. Brent
