Could you help to determine which model Shasta Travel Trailer this is? It has been sold to the person we purchased it from as a 1957 Airflyte. It was last titled in Pennsylvania as a 1997 (perhaps there was a typo in the DMV). The person we purchased it from told us its a 1962, because he found a date on the sink. It's all very confusing, and being rookies to the Shasta craze doesn't help. The VIN# V9818 appears on the tongue on a small plate heavily covered in paint. This VIN# is also on the title. The state of Minnesota, where we are trying to transfer the title, states the VIN# doesn't match and they would need to inspect the trailer in order to issue a title. This would involve a 60 mile one way trip without current license or insurance (can't get insurance until we have a title)... seems risky to me! I would really like to get the title completed correctly. It seems like a lot of work to not end up with something that would be wrong! Any help you could share would be greatly appreciated! photos to view on Flikr: www.flikr.com/photos/apoolforyou/The floorplan in your pictures shows that you have a 16SC. It was born in 1961, based on the Vin#, but probably wasn't sold until 1962. Not understanding why your DMV is stating that the Vin# doesn't match, if in fact the Vin# on the tongue and the Title do match. Hope this helps. Ross Ross

Thanks Ross! What the DMV is saying is the year on the title doesn't match the VIN. The title says the year is 1997, which it clearly is not. Hopefully with your information, I can get this all straightened out!

Hey Douglas, Please double check your Compacts Vin#. There should be a Letter in front of the series of numbers. Also, double check the entire Vin number. Out of the 384 Vin's that I have, there aren't any with a 5 digit Vin#, beginning with a 4. You defiantly have a late 60's Compact, but the Vin# doesn't fit the year. Thanks, Ross

Ross, I'm sorry, I can't figure out how to post your comment from above and then post my reply. Your reply to me looked a lot better than mine will below. I looked on the door-side (curbside) tongue frame for the VIN but I guess over the years there has been too many coats of Rustoleum applied to see the number. I guess the number is lost to the paint gods. Is there somewhere else on the trailer where I might find the VIN? You are absolutely right, my camper isn't a 1966 Shasta Compact. I've spent today comparing pics of different year models and I'm thinking mine is a 1969. I was ready to say it was 1968 or 1969, then I realized the front running light on the curbside is slightly below the five front running lights, on the 1968 the light is above the front ones. Not sure if that is a legal distinguishing difference or not. Thanks, Doug

I used a wire cup brush on a small grinder it took about 1 minute and I found the vin # stamped near the top of the curb side rail about 2 inches behind the coupler. numbers about 3/8 inch tall. CAUTION DON"T USE A GRINDER OR SANDER AS THE NUMBERS ARE VERY SHALLOW AND YOU WILL CUT THEM OFF. ONCE YOU SEE THEM IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE READING THEM RUB A YELLOW CRAYON OVER THEM IT SHOULD STICK IN THE NUMBERS ALLOWING YOU TO SEE THEM EASIER.

Ross,
Guess what? I found the correct VIN number for my Shasta Compact. Two forum members Chris and NomadicMe directed me to the right place on the thong and along with some paint stripper I was able to retrieve it. The number is P147XX.
After you clue me in on the year I'll head over to DMV and get my title straightened out.
Best Regards, Doug

I have your Shasta's Vin# as a 1968, probably born in the first quarter. As for the Model, I would need a few pictures. You can email them to me at tearjerkers2004@yahoo.com It maybe up to 10 days before I can respond back. I will be out of town on a 10 day camping trip. Ross

Your Shasta Compact was born in 1962 in Columbia, South Carolina. Hope this helps, Ross Thank you Thank you Ross, I went to look at pictures of 1962 Compacts and Spam (my Shasta's name) doesn't look like any of them. She looks a lot more like a later model. She does have wings but her interior is the whitewash paneling. I double checked her serial number and it is S1485. Do I have a Franken-Shasta? Her interior was in bad shape but was definitely original. I found a picture of one that looks a lot better, but the same configuration and siding and they called it a 1967.

In order for your Shasta to be a late 60's Compact, the Vin# would start with S4...(1967) to S6... (1969) Did you get the Vin# from the tongue of the trailer frame or off of the title? If it came from the title, that would seem to be the issue.

The year on the title and the appearance of everything above her chassis is that of a '67. Is it possible a frame was mis-stamped? Maybe re-used? I'm confused! LOL! In fact she is a dead ringer for ShastaDouglas's Compact on his avatar.

Does the vin # plate look original to the frame (plate and the welds all rusted)?
It could be possible that your Shasta's frame sat around the plant for several years before being used. Highly unlikely.
I am sorry to be at a loss on this one. There are times that Shasta's were built one year and not sold for up to two years.
Wish I could help more. Ross

Ross Yes, both the hand stamped number and the plate match equally with rusty yuck just like the rest of her frame. I even went out today and tried with more naval jelly and scraping just to make sure I was reading the numbers right and the First digit is a 1. She has the South Carolina doorplate and her vin does start with the S. I just figure if anyone is going to have the oddball it would be me I seem to have a knack for being the exception to a rule. I really appreciate all your help trying to figure her out. I have heard that 66-67 were kind of like use up all the spare parts years. So who knows what could have been used to make her.

@ squirrelmom...Do you have photos of yours, maybe that you could e-mail me or put up on photobucket or flikr, then post here? Seeing the features will be helpful in trying to nail down some idea of your specifics.

I was going to try to find my old photobucket account and post some pictures. Instead, I left it at the office. OOPs, I'm in trouble. Anyway, look for pictures early next week.
