Ross:
You may already have our Shasta in the data base. She's a 1955 Shasta 1500 with a tongue VIN of C5068.
Is the data base available?
Thanks.

Say, Ross,
Just a question... What model and year would you say would hold a serial number of P138XX. Or call the last two digits zeroes for the sake of argument. I know generally the model isn't really specified by any part of the S/N, but wondered if there was a logic to the idea they may have been made in series or lots at the factories?
Thanks, Chris

Thanks, Hugh. I did have your 1500's VIN listed.
I don't make the Shasta VIN Year and Model Database public. I do this out of respect of the Shasta members who want to keep their VIN numbers private.

Hey Chris,
As for the VIN# P138XX, all I can tell you about it is that it is a 1968 Shasta VIN.
As for telling what Model it may be, that is rare. As far as I can tell, Shasta's were made to order. No rhyme or reason why they didn't run batches of the same Model. This was the case with the South Carolina plant.
However, one plant did. In 1959 and I would believe that a good part of that year, the Indiana plant produced Airflyte's. A Deluxe was built towards the middle of that year. Indiana did produce a few of the same Models at one time, but it looks like only 3 or 4 of one particular Model were produced, back to back.
Pennsylvania would produce small runs of the Compacts, about 4 to 6 at a time, from 1967 - 1969. Hope this helps. Ross

Thanks Ross. I had my suspicions about the year, but was never too sure about the runs and batches theory. I suppose in the context of the day it makes sense that the plants would produce what the dealers ordered, rather than putting out "runs" and possibly being left with excess inventories. (In today's context, it is hard to imagine "excess inventories" of Shasta...)

Funny, until the 1970s, all the cars we got were built to order. Every extra was ordered separately instead of buying a "package" of 8 things you didn't really care about to get the one thing you really wanted. We waited with wild anticipation for about 6 weeks for the dealer to call and tell us our car had arrived. What a great memory!

1964 is correct for your Vin#. Do you have a few pictures of your Shasta that you can post or you can email them to me? This will help in identifying what model you have.

domooney,
Great looking Compact. As for the Vin#, my Database is showing that you have a 1967 Compact, not a 1961. The body style would indicate this, as well. In 1961, the body would have been rounded, not so boxy.
Hope this helps and thank you for your Shasta's Vin#

Thanks for the Vin#, Brian.
Your Shasta was born in Van Nuys, California in 1955, probably mid year. Starting in 1954 and running through most of 1956, the Shasta 1500 was the Model of choice!
Question, Is or Was your Shasta 1500 a Silverside? My database is showing that there were Shasta 1500 Silverside's produce in early 1955.
Thanks again, Ross

Hey Bri,
Silverside refers to a Shasta or Scotty that was never painted. They were finished by just leaving the raw aluminum. Not sure if they were ever polished like an Airstream. I would assume that they were left in a "mill" finish.

My wife and I just bought a Shasta, but only have the VIN at this point. We are hoping you can shed some light on more information (year, model). It is self contained and has a rear door entrance. The VIN is: FS21771. Thank you!

Based on your Vin# and your description, you have a 1963 Shasta 16SC, born in Northridge, California.
Hope this helps, Ross

Gosh, thank you SO much!! It's been hard to find one like ours online (with the rear entry). So, if it has the shower, I'm assuming it is the 16 SC/S, correct?
Out of curiousity - how are you looking these up for people? Every place I've looked charges to look up a VIN.
One more question - there was some website that I heard was helpful in replacing a missing title. Do you know anything about that? We're in Washington state.
